I recently stumbled upon an up and coming artist by the name of Jasmine Becket-Griffith aka Strangeling. You know of her? Choosing my favorite pieces of her work was both surprising and simple. Surprising because I rarely enjoy such a quantity of one’s art. Simple because I felt instantly connected to her characters. Her work is all female (I do not believe she has any male works), and consists of the impression fantastical realism – which I undoubtedly relate to.

Her work is of portrait, statue and dolls. Here will be the focus of portraits. Her style is fairy, gothic, cartoon-style with big eyes. If you’re anything like me, your first instinct is to roll your own eyes and walk away. With an open mind eager for flavor and perspective…I continued the search.

“Cancer”: My own astrological sign is portrayed with a young lady in water under the moon among waterliles. She wears a silver spiral arm band, a red crab tattoo and the zodiac symbol she wears on her shirt.

Non-Winged: Water

(A large category where much of my interest is captured)

“Angler Fish Submarine”: An imaginative illustration of a mechanical Atlantis-type angler-fish in the deep blue operated by a young lady in a corset top.

“By The Seaside”: Beautiful beach portrait of two sprites assume the chore of gathering seashells on a lovely day.

“Captain Molly Morgan”: An enchanting portrait of a legend of the seas adorned with a lustrous braid, a creature of the abyss tattoo upon her hip, and an intimidating sword.

“Crown Of Shells”: A young lady (or mermaid) shows off an elaborately elegant hairstyle in a crown-like fashion, adorned with shells and pearl strands.

“Mermaid With Cephalopods”: Lovely and mysterious mermaid in an intricate frame with nautical creatures and a tail in close resembling pattern of these creatures. The separation of these portraits are most stunning as they offer gilded triple framing with spiral decorated columns.

“Pet Trilobite”: A sorrowful young lady dressed in a rippled white-laced sheer gown soulfully embraces the long extinct trilobite of pre-triassic existence. In mourning for a time when the world was pure and free of today’s societal evils.

“Sea Storm”: My favorite of Jasmine’s water art, a jewel adorned mermaid evoking the skies and sea to unite in fury as lighting boils the waters and sapphire swells surround her.

Non-Winged: Spirits

“The Last Leaves”: (Okay, so this one has wings. However, it fell into the category of ghosts moreso than angels due to the vague transparency of her soul). An angelic forest apparition appears in gray hues with jeweled, sparkling wings against mist and fog with the sweetest of faces.

“Wood Nymph”: Incredible detail in waves and foliage create a lustrous moonlit evening in the woodland nymph realm.

“Ghost Of The Pumpkin Patch”: The essence of afterlife solemnity is captured by a young female spirit with cool demeanor yet pleading eyes in a hazy fall pumpkin patch.

“Bed Of Frogs”: A ribbity bunch creates amphibious interest.

“Autumn Wolf Maiden”: Red and orange leaves and eyes contrast beautifully against a gray and brown palette creating a peaceful and serene fall setting.

“Microcosm Fawn”: A natural alchemist aware of the big picture displays the new world limitations of wildlife as defined by this fawn.

Non-Winged: Mythological

“Phoenix Tattoo”: A jeweled and colorful unification of a phoenix with a girl who dons a phoenix tattoo.

“Portrait Of Medusa”: I was just waiting for this one, and it is more spectacular than I’d anticipated. Medusa’s facial structure is most accurate to her time of legendary existence. Her serpent locks flow with color and movement even for a still portrait.
